Kaylee Hottle’s Hollywood career had only just begun. But her performance as Jia in the Godzilla franchise had already made her one of the MonsterVerse’s most beloved young stars.
The deaf actress died Tuesday following a car crash in Maryland. She was 18.
The incident
News of Hottle’s death first emerged after her father, Joshua Hottle, shared a Facebook Live video in American Sign Language, saying his daughter had been killed in a crash. In the livestream, he explained he was traveling from Texas to Maryland after receiving the call from authorities.
Authorities later confirmed the crash happened in Ijamsville, Maryland, and involved a single vehicle. According to the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office, Hottle was riding as a passenger in a 1995 Honda Accord when the vehicle left the road and struck a culvert. She was taken to a trauma center, where she later died from her injuries.
The 19-year-old driver suffered non-life-threatening injuries, and another passenger declined medical treatment. Investigators believe excessive speed may have been a factor, though the investigation remains ongoing.
Her work on screen
Hottle only appeared in a handful of projects, but she made a lasting impression through Jia, the deaf orphan whose bond with Kong became one of the emotional anchors of Godzilla vs. Kong (2021).
The role resonated for reasons beyond the story itself. Hottle, who was deaf and came from a multigenerational deaf family, communicated using American Sign Language both on screen and off. Director Adam Wingard’s films never treated Jia’s deafness as something to be explained or overcome. It was simply part of who she was, making Hottle’s casting an important moment for authentic representation in a major studio blockbuster.
She returned as Jia in 2024’s Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, where the character remained central to Kong’s story. Her performance earned a Saturn Award nomination for Best Younger Performer, reflecting the promise many saw in her early career.
Outside the MonsterVerse, Hottle also appeared in an episode of Magnum P.I. and began acting after appearing in a commercial promoting accessibility through American Sign Language
