Imagine getting invited to the biggest celebrity wedding of the year… and deleting the invitation because you thought it was a scam.
That’s exactly what happened to ESPN star Pat McAfee. He nearly missed Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s wedding after assuming the invitation was fake, leaving Kelce to personally reach out and convince him it was the real deal.
Why Pat McAfee kept deleting the wedding invite
During the July 14 episode of The Pat McAfee Show, the ESPN host revealed that he almost became the last person to RSVP to Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s highly secretive July 3 wedding in New York. The reason wasn’t scheduling conflicts or travel plans. He genuinely believed someone was trying to scam him.
McAfee admitted that he received emails and text messages containing details for the event, but because they came with links from an unfamiliar number, every alarm bell went off.
Instead of opening them, he just deleted the messages. Then another one arrived. He deleted that one, too.
McAfee explained that he had recently been involved in cybersecurity-related work, making him even more suspicious of unexpected texts with links. From his perspective, it looked exactly like the kind of phishing attempt people are warned about every day.
The groom had to step in himself
Luckily for McAfee, Travis Kelce noticed something was off.
After receiving no response, Kelce sent his friend a quick text to let him know the invitations were real. That simple message was enough to turn confusion into relief.
McAfee finally opened the link and realized he’d been deleting his invitation to one of the biggest celebrity weddings of the year. He later joked about the misunderstanding, but also admitted he appreciated the personal follow-up from Kelce, who made sure one misplaced assumption didn’t keep a friend from celebrating with them.
The digital invitations almost fooled everyone
McAfee’s story also offered another glimpse into just how carefully Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce planned their wedding.
Instead of traditional paper invitations, the couple reportedly chose personalized digital invites as part of a carefully planned security strategy. Guests received secure links with limited information upfront, while additional details were revealed closer to the celebration. Reports also suggested that each invitation was customized and watermarked, making it much harder for private information to leak online.
Ironically, those extra security measures worked almost too well.
McAfee wasn’t the only guest who paused before clicking.
Actor Eric Stonestreet later revealed that he and his wife also wondered whether their invitation was legitimate before realizing it was genuine. BBC Radio 1 host Greg James shared a similar experience, admitting he initially thought his invite looked suspicious as well.
It turns out McAfee wasn’t alone. If you suddenly received a message claiming you’d been invited to Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s wedding, you’d probably double-check before clicking the link, too.
