The fan-favorite, strawberry and sunshine couple has taken a short trip down memory lane into their beloved romance. And like any true supporter, I’m fully involved to know more about their love story. So, put your seat belts on and be prepared for some heartfelt (or gut wrenching if you’re single) moments throughout.
How It Started
Selena Gomez and Benny Blanco were friendly collaborators for years before dating began privately in summer 2023, around Selena’s birthday (as per Benny on Howard Stern, May 2024). Keeping their evolving affection under wraps, the couple stayed private for 8-9 months before going public.
So yes, seems like a friends-to-lovers trope.
The Question That Almost Changed Everything
Right before their public hard launch, Selena revealed that in December 2023, she asked Benny directly: “Are you sure you want to do this? I understand if you want us to just be friends.” Sounds like she was giving him a genuine out, I mean we’re all aware of how intense the scrutiny of dating her could be.
His response, quoted in his words: “You know what? Screw it.” He credited their mutual friends and family (people they’d known before fame) for making the decision feel safe and final.
And if you ask me, that one sentence seems enough for Selena to be sure of him.
Going Public, Step by Step
In my personal and expert opinion, taking baby steps leads to successful results, and that’s why #Selenny did so as well.
Sometime in December 2023: Selena confirmed the brewing romance in an Instagram comment, calling Benny “her absolute everything,” adding “he’s still better than anyone I’ve ever been with,” definitely love the latter comment.
She also shared a photo wearing a bejeweled “B” ring, a detail that felt like something straight out of a Taylor Swift song, and multiple NYC outings with him and friends.
Throughout 2024, the relationship played out publicly: Lakers games, birthday tributes, matching TikTok challenges, and PDA-filled getaways.
From Girlfriend to Wife
Perhaps, the most ideal transition for any girl in love.
In December 2024, Selena announced their engagement with “Forever begins now”; Benny being Benny joked in the comments, “hey wait… that’s my wife.” If you’re even a bit chronically online, you’d know about the prevalent romance that goes on in the comment section when any one of them posts of their soon-to-be-better-half.
Finally, coming to their wedding, They married in Santa Barbara on September 27, 2025, with guests including Taylor Swift, Martin Short, Steve Martin, and Paul Rudd. It was exactly the kind of marriage you and I wish we could attend.
Fame Was Part of the Conversation
As it should be, considering they’re both such big names.
Benny opened up about how quickly his own fame escalated right as they started dating. His song “Eastside” blew up around 2018-2019, and he says dating Selena accelerated that attention even further: “It was like what I was going through got a rocket boost,” he told in an interview with El País/Icon.
In short, we can say she became his lucky charm.
He called fame “a necessary evil for the things I love, including my wife,” and I couldn’t agree more. He remarked that he still isn’t fully used to being under a spotlight the way she’s dealt with her whole life.
As much as of a green flag Benny Blanco is, he’s also a whole character himself. He has said that he prefers privacy, keeping social media simple: mostly a photo of his wife or a meal he’s tried. He’s just so relatable, I mean I’d do the same if I bagged someone as iconic as Selena.
What’s Next For Benny
Currently, he’s on enroute to releasing a book, “F—k Failure,” on September 15, mixing personal stories with advice on pursuing creative goals; eagerly waiting for this one.
He’s releasing his first Spanish-language album, “Hermoso,” on August 14, inspired by the Latin music he grew up around. Selena is rumored to appear on the album, though this isn’t officially confirmed yet, it’ll be a banger.
Just to flag out his green flag-ness: He also told Interview he knew shortly after they started dating that he wanted to propose, kind of hints at love at first sight.
As for Selena, being the pop-star she is and executing her makeup brand Rare Beauty successfully, I’d say she’s down a great path already.
