Tom Cruise has finally done the one thing no Mission: Impossible stunt ever could: he made audiences ask, “Wait… is that really Tom Cruise?”
The first Digger trailer throws away the movie star image he’s spent decades building. In its place is a gray-haired Southern oil billionaire with a potbelly, a thinning comb-over, an almost unhealthy obsession with his cat, and an ego so oversized he genuinely believes he’s the only person who can save humanity.
It’s funny. It’s bizarre. And it might be the boldest acting risk of Cruise’s career.
Tom Cruise Is Almost Unrecognizable as Digger Rockwell
For more than 30 years, Cruise has been Hollywood’s definition of the ageless action star. Whether he was sprinting through impossible missions as Ethan Hunt or returning to the skies in Top Gun: Maverick, audiences expected him to outrun danger, not old age.
That’s why Digger lands such a strong first impression.
Cruise’s first appearance is almost shocking. His face is weathered beneath layers of prosthetic makeup, his gray hair is combed awkwardly across his forehead, his belly hangs over his belt, and he’s carrying a cat with the kind of devotion most people reserve for family. If you weren’t expecting it, you could genuinely mistake him for someone else.
But this isn’t Tom Cruise making fun of himself. He’s disappearing into Digger Rockwell, a wildly eccentric Southern oil billionaire whose confidence only grows as the world around him falls apart.
The Cat, the Chaos and the Comedy
Rather than opening with explosions or action, the trailer introduces Digger through his strange priorities. While governments panic, scientists warn of catastrophe and the world inches closer to disaster, Digger remains oddly fixated on his cat, carrying it from room to room as if nothing else deserves his attention.

It’s a running joke throughout the trailer, and somehow it never stops being funny.
His dialogue is just as unhinged.
At one point, Digger reflects, “Everything changes. One day you’re a cat, or a king. Next day you’re just ashes in a box.” Later, as tensions continue to rise, he confidently declares, “If we can’t control the course of nature, all that matters is who’s got the balls to win this war.”

Those lines could easily come across as ridiculous. Instead, Cruise delivers them with complete sincerity, which is exactly why they work. Digger never realizes how absurd he sounds, and that’s where much of the comedy comes from.
Alejandro G. Iñárritu May Have Brought Out a Different Side of Cruise
The biggest surprise isn’t the makeup. It’s the filmmaker behind it.

Oscar winner Alejandro G. Iñárritu, whose films include Birdman, The Revenant and Amores Perros, has spent much of his career exploring power, ego and flawed men convinced they’re in control. Digger appears to carry those same themes, only this time they’re wrapped inside a dark comedy instead of a straight drama.

The trailer constantly balances looming catastrophe with deadpan humor. One minute the world appears to be unraveling, the next Digger is delivering another bizarre monologue or fussing over his cat. It’s an unusual mix of satire and spectacle that feels very different from anything Cruise has done in recent years.
Cruise Called It a 40-Year Journey
Speaking during the film’s presentation at CinemaCon, Cruise explained how much the role meant to him, saying, “It took 40 years for me to be able to put on the boots of Digger Rockwell.”

Iñárritu was just as enthusiastic about Cruise’s transformation, telling audiences, “We know that he’s fearless… But I have to say, embodying this character is another kind of fearless.”
After watching the trailer, it’s easy to understand why both men speak about the film with so much excitement. Cruise isn’t trying to preserve the image that made him one of Hollywood’s biggest stars. He’s taking pleasure in completely dismantling it.
Early Audience Reactions Say the Same Thing
The trailer has already sparked plenty of conversation online. Many viewers admitted they didn’t recognize Cruise at first glance, while others praised him for embracing such an unexpected role after years of leading blockbuster franchises. Some even compared the film’s satirical tone to Dr. Strangelove, suggesting Digger could become one of the actor’s strangest and the most memorable projects.

Beyond Cruise, the film also boasts an impressive supporting cast that includes Sandra Hüller, Jesse Plemons, Riz Ahmed, Emma D’Arcy, Sophie Wilde, Michael Stuhlbarg and John Goodman. The trailer only offers brief glimpses of their characters, keeping the spotlight firmly on Digger Rockwell and his increasingly chaotic worldview.
By the time the trailer ends, it’s not the scale of the disaster that stays with you. It’s the image of Tom Cruise, gray-haired, clutching his cat with complete conviction while believing he alone can save the world.
After decades of redefining the modern action hero, could Digger become the film that reminds audiences Tom Cruise is just as fearless when he’s willing to look completely unlike himself?
