If you’re in the mood to be at the edge of your seat, praying for the protagonist to survive the multiple brutal attempts at their death, you’re at the right place. And no, here action doesn’t mean extensive CGI, these are real stunts staged well. Whether it’s a classic action film or a whole fantasy world, you’ll find something for each.
Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)
Director George Miller single-handedly revived the post apocalyptic genre. The movie went on to win six Academy Awards and is now studied in film schools as a masterclass in action choreography. And no, it’s not related to Max from Stranger Things.
A relentless two hour chase sequence set across a barren desert wasteland. Max teams up with Imperator Furiosa, played by Charlize Theron, as she rebels against the tyrannical Immortan Joe. There is barely time to breathe between explosive set pieces, war rigs, flame throwing guitars, and sandstorms adding to the chaos.
Contrary to popular belief, Furiosa is the real protagonist, not the one carrying the title. It gives the audience a fierce, emotionally driven heroine whose quest for redemption drives the entire story.
John Wick (2014)
The classic, the myth, the legend John Wick. Keanu Reeves, the lead actor, trained extensively in judo, jiu jitsu, and tactical shooting to create a new style called gun fu. The film spawned a franchise that keeps getting better with each sequel.
A retired hitman returns to the criminal underworld after a group of Russian gangsters steal his car and kill his dog, the last gift from his late wife. What follows is a brutally stylish revenge spree through neon lit nightclubs, empty warehouses, and rain-soaked streets. Every bullet and punch is precisely choreographed.
The Continental hotel, gold coins, and the High Table created a mythology that fans love exploring. It turned a simple revenge story into a sprawling cinematic universe.
Mission Impossible Fallout (2018)
This one is widely considered the best entry in a franchise that has been running for over two decades. Tom Cruise performed some of the most dangerous stunts ever committed to film, including a HALO jump and helicopter chase, all without a stunt double.
Ethan Hunt must stop a group of terrorists from acquiring plutonium cores while dealing with the fallout of a mission gone wrong. The film features a jaw dropping bathroom fight, a motorcycle chase through Paris, and a helicopter sequence in the mountains of Kashmir. Every set piece feels real because it is.
Not only is it just an action movie, there’s an emotionally meaningful story behind it, exploring Ethan’s guilt and his loyalty to his team. It raised the bar for what audience expects from spy-action films.
The Dark Knight (2008)
The list wouldn’t be complete without a DC movie (also Nolan). Christopher Nolan delivered a crime thriller that happened to feature Batman, earning Heath Ledger a posthumous Oscar for his portrayal of the Joker.
Batman faces his greatest challenge yet as the Joker plunges Gotham into chaos with a series of escalating attacks. The film features the iconic truck flip, an interrogation scene that has been endlessly analyzed, and a finale that forces Batman to make an impossible choice.
The Joker, known for his iconic sadness, is not after money or power, he wants to prove that anyone can become as broken as he is. The film asks whether a hero can truly make a difference in a world that seems determined to tear itself apart.
Avengers Endgame (2019)
If there’s a DC movie, there has to be an MCU movie as well. This film became the highest grossing movie of all time upon release and delivered a finale that satisfied millions of fans worldwide.
The remaining Avengers attempt to reverse the snap that wiped out half of all life in the universe. The film features time travel, emotional reunions, and the most massive battle sequence ever put on screen. The portals scene and Captain America lifting Mjolnir remain two of the most celebrated moments in pop culture history.
Ultimately, Endgame is a story about grief and moving on. The film gave fans closure while honoring the journey that brought everyone to that moment, a rare win-win in franchise filmmaking.
I mean if you haven’t watched this one, you haven’t seen anything.
Top Gun Maverick (2022)
Another Tom Cruise classic. Top Gun Maverick arrived 36 years after the original and somehow exceeded every expectation. It became the highest grossing film of Cruise’s career and revived the theatrical experience after the pandemic.
Maverick returns to train a new generation of Top Gun graduates for a seemingly impossible mission. The training sequences are intense, the banter between pilots is sharp, and the final mission is an edge-of-the-seat ride from start to finish. The film balances honoring the original while standing on its own.
Maverick must confront his past, including the death of Goose, while preparing a new generation creating his legacy, and for dangers he can no longer face alone.
Extraction (2020)
If gruesome is your forté, this one’s for you. Extraction proved that Netflix could produce action films that rival theatrical releases. Chris Hemsworth proved he could carry a gritty action film without a superhero (Thor) suit.
Tyler Rake, a black market mercenary, is hired to rescue the kidnapped son of an international crime lord in Dhaka, Bangladesh. The film is brutally violent, with hand to hand fights that feel raw and painful. The one take sequence is still a popular action choreography topic.
The movie does not romanticize violence. Tyler is a broken man haunted by his past, and the film shows the physical and emotional toll this takes on his profession.
No Time to Die (2021)
An action movie list definitely calls for a 007 name. It marked the end of Daniel Craig’s tenure as the beloved and chic James Bond, a run that redefined the character for a more modern audience.
Bond comes out of retirement to face a new villain armed with a devastating biological weapon. The opening chase in Matera, Italy, is one of the best pre title sequences in Bond history. Ana de Armas delivers a standout action scene in Cuba, and the finale takes Bond to a remote island fortress.
The film gave Bond a moving emotional arc, including love, fatherhood, and sacrifice. It honored the legacy of the franchise while daring to do something no Bond film had done before. An absolute masterpiece.
Dune Part Two (2024)
With its second sequel releasing in December this year, Dune Part Two delivers gigantic scale battles, sandworm riding sequences, and a level of visual grandeur rarely seen in modern-day cinema.
Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet) unites with the Fremen to take revenge on those who destroyed his family. He sees his future and knows it leads to a galaxy wide war, yet he cannot escape his destiny. The film features stunning desert battles and edgy blade-to-blade combat. Austin Butler delivers a chilling performance as the villain Feyd Rautha.
The film asks whether a leader who knows the cost of victory can still be trusted to lead, a question that feels highly relevant even today. It raised the bar for science-fiction filmmaking.
The Batman (2022)
Another batman recommendation, because why not? The hype is genuine.
The film proved there was still new ground to cover with a character who has been adapted countless times. Matt Reeves delivered a fresh take on Batman that leaned into the character’s detective roots. Robert Pattinson surprised everyone with a vulnerable performance that felt completely new.
A younger Batman in his second year of fighting crime hunts the Riddler, a serial killer targeting Gotham’s elite. The Batmobile chase through the streets is one of the best car sequences. The fight scenes are raw and brutal, with Batman facing real damage in every confrontation.
This hero is not confident, he is a broken, obsessive loner who is still figuring out what he is doing, so relatable. The film uses Nirvana’s Something in the Way to capture a mood of melancholy and decay that describes this version of Gotham.
Frankly, when it comes to action movies, there are several genres in it. Be it spy, fantasy, scientific or a rugged protagonist, we covered it all. A good action film is always backed by a meaningful emotional story that resonates with its viewers, so I hope you find yours here.
