With complete confidence, I declare 2026 to officially be the year of book adaptations. Like the title suggests, there’s a book adaptation, or adaptations I should say, for every genre and mood this year. Ranging from rom-coms to the classics, we have you covered! Keep going to find the exact match for your moodboard.
Rom-Coms, Feel-Good
Off Campus
When it come to rom-coms in 2026, there’s plenty to choose from. But perhaps only two best book adaptations for this particular genre. Starting off strong with Off Campus, a show streaming on Prime Video, based on a fake- dating trope between an academic topper and a star hockey player, striving to up his grades.
The Love Hypothesis
Coincidentally enough, the next adaptation, The Love Hypothesis, is a movie also based on the fake-dating trope, but between a professor and a student, proving her best friend that she’s over her crush. As if this wasn’t enough, the book authored by Ali Hazelwood, will also have its adaptation release digitally on Prime Video on 23 September 2026. Guess 2026 is also the year of coincidences.
Horror: Definitely Not Feel-Good
The most frightening genre of all, some might say it’s rom-com, but I beg to differ. It is, indeed, horror. To fill the plate for this genre, we have Other Mommy, based on Josh Malerman’s book, Incidents Around the House, wherein a young girl talks to an entity she calls “Other Mommy”, a creature in her closet that asks for permission to enter her heart. The horror unfolds entirely from the child’s perspective, making it even more terrifying. The movie is set for theatrical release on 9 October 2026.
Thriller: Trust No One
Perhaps, my most favourite genre of all time, and might I add, the book-adaptations for this genre are the most apt. With Freida McFadden’s The Housemaid, released in theaters last December, now widely available, the bar is set quite high. The stellar cast follows the storyline of a woman who wants to start over working for an affluent couple, but gets trapped in their gore secrets.
Up next, we have Colleen Hoover’s Verity, her best thriller book yet, the movie is set to hit the cinemas on 2 October 2026. The plot involves a ghostwriter hired by the husband of a woman who wrote a successful series of books, but that’s not it, she’s also known to hide dark truths. Like the previous one, the cast here is no less.
The Classic Epics
Easily claimed as the one of the most anticipated movies this year, The Odyssey, will have its theatrical release on 17 July 2026. Directed by Christopher Nolan, the movie is an epic adaptation of a Greek poem by Homer and follows the legendary Greek king Odysseus on his gruesome ten-year journey home after the Trojan War.
Alongside this, we have a classic goth romance, Wuthering Heights, written by the infamous, Emily Brontë. The story follows the love tragedy, when Heathcliff falls for Catherine Earnshaw, a woman from a wealthy family in 18th-century England. The movie was released theatrically earlier this year, with a cast you wouldn’t want to miss.
While this list ends here, your actual streaming list begins now. Read the book first, then watch the movie/series or vice-versa, you have it all now. Hopefully, Hollywood’s shift towards book-adaptations doesn’t disappoint the true book-lovers.
