2026 is definitely the year of book adaptations, and joining the trend, is an adaptation of one of Ali Hazelwood’s bestselling novels (and my personal favourite), ”The Love Hypothesis.” The teaser trailer, starring Lili Reinhart as Olive Smith, the female lead and Tom Bateman as Dr. Adam Carlsen, the male lead, dropped on 27 June 2026 at Amazon Prime Video’s inaugural Obsessed Fest
Origin Of The Story
Interestingly, this storyline started from Ali Hazelwood reworking one of her fanfics called, “Head Over Feet”, that she wrote in 2018. Even more interestingly, this fanfic is based on “ReyLo” a fan-made ship for Disney Star Wars’ two central characters, Rey and Kylo Ren. In the movies, these two don’t end up together, but the romantic tension between them was intense enough for the audience to ship the idea of them being together.
Perhaps, the most interesting Meta detail: Kylo Ren is played by Adam Driver, the first name being the same as the male lead in “The Love Hypothesis”, Dr. Adam Carlsen. Oh, but it doesn’t end here. Rey, played by Daisy Ridley, is actually Tom Bateman’s wife IRL! In my opinion, these small but significant details complement the movie’s rom-com genre well and thrills the audience more.
The Plot
In the ordinary but scientific life of Olive Smith, she has to prove to her best friend that she’s over her crush. Now, she does succeed, but how? By impulsively kissing her grumpy professor Dr. Adam Carlsen. For their individual reasons, the “Grumpy X Sunshine” (Internet-given name, I approve) couple decides on a fake-dating pact that truly blossoms into every teenage girl’s dream.
Since there’s no official statement by the actors or makers if the storyline would be completely based on the book or there might be a few tweaks, I don’t mind either, I trust Hazelwood. I mean, the innovative trailer has me quite hooked and positive that this book adaptation won’t be a bore, like a few written by- let’s not name who. It’s only obvious.
Is Fake-Dating The Official Trope Of 2026?
From “You, Me and Tuscany” (Movie), “Off Campus” (Series) to now “The Love Hypothesis” (Movie), all the romantics that have trended so far this year follow the fake-dating trope. While the storyline among all these is quite different, the genre that carries all of them is quite cliché. Not to mention, the latter two are book adaptations as well, making the themes feel a little repetitive.
So, does this mean this trope won’t work anymore? Quite the opposite. In fact, “Off Campus” worked well and won some hype; and as for Ali’s adaptation, the audience including me, has their hopes up even more, after watching the latest teaser trailer. Despite having the same trope, these stories are well-written and carry a distinct plot that appeals to the viewers and wins their hearts.
The Cast

The makers didn’t stop at the storyline, the cast is nothing less than stellar either. Starting off with Lili Reinhart as Olive Smith, the same actor who played Betty Cooper in the infamous “Riverdale” series; Next up, Tom Bateman, the male lead as Dr. Adam Carlsen, known for his role as Bouc in the Agatha Christie adaptations, Murder on the Orient Express (2017) and Death on the Nile (2022). Alongside them, we’ll see Rachel Marsh as Anh, Arty Froushan as Tom and Nicholas Duvernay as Jeremy.
The book-adaptation-movie is set to premiere on Prime Video on 23 September 2026. Happy Streaming!
