Grey’s Anatomy shared its Season 23 cast photo on July 24, and pretty quickly, people noticed Ellen Pompeo wasn’t in it. No Meredith Grey, in a show named after her. That’s the kind of thing fans catch.
The photo went up on the show’s official Instagram, @greysabc, and it’s worth seeing for yourself before you read into it too much.
The comments filled up fast underneath it, and across X and Reddit too, with plenty of people asking if she was leaving the show for good. Over on r/greysanatomy, longtime viewers said it felt strange to see a new season kick off without her in the usual group shot.
She’s not leaving, though. She just hasn’t needed to be in that photo for a few years now.
The Deal That’s Been Hiding in Plain Sight Since 2022
Pompeo stepped back from full-time cast duty starting in Season 19, trading her every-episode role for a recurring one. She kept narrating the show and stayed on as an executive producer, but her on-screen appearances shrank to a handful of episodes per season. Practically speaking, that means she’s often just not on set for group photo day.
She’s been open about why. Speaking to El País last year, Pompeo said the move was about finally building more balance after nearly 20 years on the show, so she could spend more time with her three kids. It’s a low-drama explanation for what fans keep treating like a mystery.
Who’s Actually in the Season 23 Cast Photo
The image ABC shared featured a solid chunk of the current ensemble: Chandra Wilson, James Pickens Jr., Debbie Allen, Camilla Luddington, Caterina Scorsone, Harry Shum Jr., Adelaide Kane, Niko Terho, Anthony Hill, and Trevor Jackson, among others.
Missing, alongside Pompeo, were Kevin McKidd and Kim Raver, but for a different reason. Both actors are exiting the show, with their departures confirmed after the Season 22 finale. That leaves Wilson, Pickens Jr., and Allen as the show’s last remaining original-cast holdouts still walking Grey Sloan’s halls.
So really, there are two absences being read as one story. Pompeo’s is a scheduling quirk. McKidd and Raver’s is an actual goodbye.
What This Means for Meredith This Season
Here’s the more interesting question the photo doesn’t answer: what does Pompeo’s limited screen time actually cover this season?
Season 22 ended with Meredith freshly engaged to Nick Marsh, in the aftermath of the show’s bridge-collapse finale. She’s also now living primarily in Boston rather than Seattle. That’s a lot of unfinished business for a character who’s mostly off-screen. Expect her handful of Season 23 episodes to lean into that engagement storyline and the long-distance dynamic with Grey Sloan, rather than a return to full-time Seattle life.
What Ellen Pompeo Is Doing Instead
Pompeo’s Grey Sloan hours have shrunk, but her Grey’s footprint hasn’t. She’s currently starring in Hulu’s Good American Family, and she’s attached as an executive producer on ABC’s upcoming Texas-set Grey’s Anatomy spinoff, proof that stepping back from daily filming isn’t the same as stepping away from the franchise.
