We’ve had enough of thriller-crime fictions stories. Now it’s time for a real life story that’ll disturb you but also excite you. I’m talking about Netflix’s newest release, a documentary called A Toxic Love Story, a framed innocent lady who, as the title suggests, had to spend 88 days in jail.
The Setup
A whirlwind romance that turned into a nightmare, sounds familiar right?
Michelle Hadley met deputy US marshal Ian Diaz in 2013 and the two got engaged. But what started as a fairy tale quickly soured.
Ian grew increasingly volatile and controlling, obsessively tracking Michelle’s whereabouts. He pressured her into a sexual fantasy where he could watch her with another man, and on Valentine’s Day, she reluctantly went through with it.
She ended the relationship in 2015. Ian moved on fast, marrying Angela Connell in early 2016, and the couple soon announced they were expecting twins. A pregnancy later revealed to be entirely fake, complete with doctored sonograms and altered pregnancy tests.
That’s exactly when the nightmare truly began for Michelle.
The Stalker
Trigger warning because this is pretty intense.
Shortly after Ian and Angela married, Angela began receiving increasingly violent threatening emails from someone calling themselves “Lilithistruth.” “You have stolen my life… Good luck getting back to the condo,” read one of the first.
The messages escalated quickly: “We will steal your child and watch as it dies.” Attached to the emails were images of decapitated bodies and aborted foetuses. The stalker also posed as Angela on Craigslist, posting ads inviting men to come to the couple’s condo for “rape fantasies.”
Angela told police a man had attacked her, and the evidence she presented pointed squarely at Michelle. Hence, her 88-day stint in jail.
The Frame-Up

Cracks in Angela’s story began to show almost immediately. Her ex-boyfriend Jason Rayburn came forward with a disturbing pattern: Angela had told him she had Stage 4 cervical cancer but refused to let him attend chemotherapy appointments.
When he finally took her to a doctor’s office, the receptionist told him she was being treated for a mole removal, not cancer. She had used someone else’s photo from inside a chemo session. Screams fishy, right?
She also claimed to be an attorney with the Department of Justice: a complete lie.
Jason’s friend Mary Bukovskis found medical tubing hidden among Angela’s belongings. In a never-before-seen on-camera intervention featured in the documentary, the group confronted Angela.
The Twist You Won’t See Coming
Yes, there’s more to the story.
The twist, which the filmmakers ask viewers not to spoil, reveals that the entire stalking campaign was orchestrated by Angela and Ian themselves.
Angela had been sending the threats, posting the Craigslist ads, and framing Michelle from the very beginning. Ian, as a deputy US marshal, used his position to lend credibility to Angela’s accusations against Michelle.
The Aftermath
All charges against Michelle were eventually dropped. Angela was sentenced to five years in prison in 2017, and in 2023, Ian was separately convicted after investigators determined he’d helped orchestrate the plot, but for Michelle the damage was far from gone.
She spent nearly three months behind bars for a crime she didn’t commit. The experience, she says, was the most traumatic of her life, of course.
Since her release, Michelle has become an outspoken advocate for survivors of domestic abuse and financial abuse. She lost her entire savings in the down payment on the Anaheim condo she shared with Ian, money she obviously never got back.
Her message to women in similar situations: trust your gut, have compassion for yourself, and understand that “the person they are when they abuse you is who they are.”
What the Critics Are Saying
The Guardian calls it “a welcome return to form” for Netflix true crime, praising its ability to keep viewers on edge until the very end. The Roger Ebert review says it “shakes up the true-crime genre” by focusing on a love triangle driven not by greed but by something more unsettling.
What the Documentary Leaves Out
The documentary includes previously unseen police bodycam footage that offers a perspective audiences haven’t seen before, though those involved acknowledge there are things about the plot we’ll never fully know.
This lying couple aimed to paint Michelle as a scorned ex-fiancée seeking revenge. Rightfully, they couldn’t succeed without getting caught.
