The R&B singer revealed that she has been battling leukemia, a diagnosis she kept private while undergoing treatment. In her first public update, Nivea opened up about finding gratitude, returning to music, and embracing a new perspective on life.
A Private Battle Becomes a New Perspective
Nivea opened up about her diagnosis during an appearance on Cadillac Chronicles, where the conversation moved from her career into the personal struggles she’s faced away from the spotlight.
She said she’s grateful for how her treatment has gone so far, and she wanted fans to know she remains hopeful.
“Well, first of all, I was diagnosed with leukemia earlier this year, and I’m so grateful to God. I’ve been going through treatment, and everything is going great so far. And I expect it to continue. Amen, amen, amen.”
Talking about the diagnosis wasn’t just about telling people what happened. It gave her a chance to explain how she’s been getting through it.
“I’m very grateful for life. It’s so cliché to say, you don’t know the time nor the hour, but it’s true, and it just helped me put a lot of things in perspective. I live in gratitude religiously, and I’m just grateful for everything.”
She hasn’t let the diagnosis take over her story. Instead, she’s kept her attention on what she still wants to build.
Finding Her Voice in a New Way
The health scare didn’t pull Nivea away from music. It pulled her back in.
She’s working on new music again, and she’s also studying audio engineering, something she’s wanted to do for years.
“I’m doing things I want to do. I’m definitely back into my music, and I’m going to school for audio engineering. I’ve always wanted to learn how to engineer, and mixing engineering in particular.”
Nivea built her name on her voice during the early 2000s R&B era, with songs like “Don’t Mess With My Man” and “Laundromat” introducing her to fans. “Don’t Mess With My Man” went on to earn her a Grammy nomination, one of the highlights of her career. Now she’s learning the technical side, a part of the process she’s never worked from before.
Her return to music isn’t just about the craft, either. She said spending time with her kids and appreciating everyday moments has become just as important.
“Loving on my children, and just being grateful and taking every opportunity that comes my way.”
The Artist Behind the Comeback
Nivea has always connected with fans through the emotion in her music. Since breaking through in the early 2000s, she’s kept releasing music and building a career that made her one of the era’s recognizable voices.
More than 20 years after her 2001 debut album, she’s stepping into a new role, learning production while she keeps performing.
