The consistent slow burn romance between Enola and Tewkesbury has ultimately evolved now and we’re so down for it! As a member of the “Homesbury” fanbase, seeing the relationship between both these characters grow into something so mature and beautiful, I admit, it’s quite feel-good. From strangers on a train to now on the brink of getting married, we’ve witnessed it all!
A Romance in the Making Since Three Films
Enola (Millie Bobby Brown) and Tewkesbury (Louis Partridge) meet in the first film on a train, where the former rescued the latter runaway lord. In the second film, their connection deepens as they reunite and work together again. Their slow burn over the years finally pays off in the second sequel.
Not only have they grown individually, becoming more comprehensive of the world, but are also on the verge of getting married. Well, at least that’s where the movie picks up from, but does it actually happen? Knowing Enola, that would be a tough decision to make. Conforming to the norms of society while continuing her rebellious lifestyle, as Sherlock remarked in the movie, “…do as you’re told?”
Victorian Love But Make it Modern
While the story is set in the Victorian era, limiting the expectations of grand romantic gestures, it’s still rooted in a realistic love story. As strong as the affection between Enola and Tewkesbury is, it’s also rational and empowering. Enola isn’t waiting around to be saved by her love interest, rather she enjoys her independence and Tewkesbury reluctantly supports her. I suppose, I wouldn’t expect anything less considering Louis Partridge paints the picture of a walking-green-flag.
The Actors’ Chemistry
Any good ship rolls out as a fan favourite, majorly based on the actors’ relations off-camera. No doubt we adore the on-screen pair, but you’re a real fan only if you know about the chemistry behind the camera. Millie and Louis have an easy-going friendship with occasional banter that doesn’t feel forced.
In many interviews, they have expressed how comfortable they are with each other; which is another reason why their pairing in the movie reflects such warmth and natural chemistry. The sincerity that both the actors have played their entangled characters with, is utterly praised. Evidently, a lot of the credit goes to the actors themselves including Henry Cavil (Sherlock Holmes) and Helena Bonham Carter (Eudoria) as well.
Why does it work?
Particularly, the Enola and Tewkesbury romance works because it was never rushed or forced. It has always given the audience a relatable and authentic feel, instead of blindly following a storyline. Their relationship adds depth to the recurring mysteries and thrills of the movies, defining the lead characters alongside.
Another reason: Millie plays a free-spirited woman, Enola, a character that the audience digs extensively in today’s time. The icing on the cake? Louis’s lovelorn character who’s nothing except encouraging of his fiancée’s adventures and dreams; like I said earlier, green flag. Interestingly, he develops a character arc of his own in the third movie.
A good romantic plot doesn’t distract from the story, but actually complements it. And that’s exactly the case with Enola and Tewkesbury. As entertaining the journey was, they have finally reached the point where they decide, whether to marry or not (No spoilers here). Regardless, Enola will always remain fully in control, after all, it is her story.
